The action takes place on two schedule. At present it’s about an old man (James Garner) who reads for a senile woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing house where they are both patients. It’s a love story he read, and gradually becomes a lady immersed within the action and want to know how the romantic relationship between the book Noah and Allie ends.
The story of Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) is dated to prior to, during and following World War II. Noah is poor mill works that fall – so emphatically that he is about to throw himself from a Ferris wheel – for the rich summer visitors Allie. She is really a “Southern belle” from Charleston, utilized to walk within the plantation atmosphere with beautiful horses, flashy cars and large diamonds.
