How many qts of automatic tranny fluid does it take in a 2 speed power glide take, for a routine change?
1969 El Camino.

(Not counting the torque converter)

4 qts for a dry powerglide tranny, stock pan. This is not counting torque converter.

13" converter holds 5 qt.
12" converter holds 4 qt
11" converter holds 3.5 qt.
10" converter holds 3 qt.

So anywhere from 7 to 9 qt for tranny and converter

I have the money to fix only one what one is better el camino has a 350 v8 and the cavalier has a 2.5 4 cylinder

Your idea of fix & mine may be miles apart… Without seeing the cars, I’ll say the truck since it’s worth more & has more aftermarket resto parts.

When i bought the car about 2 months ago the oil pressure gauge would always be at 50 . Today i noticed when im at a stop light it goes down to under 25. when i hit the gas again it goes back up. Is this right or do i need oil or is it something else? Thanks for answering

Actually this is about right. GM cars have always benn kind of notorious for low oil pressure at idle.

I’ve owned GM cars and trucks most of my life and low oil pressure at idle has always been common.

i am looking to buy a el camino with a 350 4 main motor, im pretty good with fuel injected cars but im worried i dont know enough about carb engines, what are some things to look for when buying a car with a 350 motor? And How do the 350 motors work compared to say a 2.0 Fuel Injected motor?

The early TBI engines are essentially the same as the carbureted ones. The later ones have some differences in the heads and obviously the intake systems, and they use roller cams. As far as condition and such the same rules would apply whether it has a carb or not. I’m not sure what your question is about a 2.0, a small 4 cylinder and big V-8 are very different animals in how they behave and how you would modify them. A 350 will have much more torque and generally turn a lot slower than a 4 cylinder at a given speed.

IMO, silver isn’t real great with chrome. I’d find a deep cherry red or royal blue.

no, the 80′s camino’s looked awful but the 1973-76 Camino’s looked fine

I started driving in the 70′s so the El C is a great car to me. its a niche car, not many were made and parts can be hard to come by.

Some of these El Caminos came with an anemic 2.56 rear gear……a set of 3.08′s or 3.42′s would help tremendously. Beyond that….. recurve the distributor, ascertain the vacuum advance is working properly….lean down the APT adjustment on the front barrels of your Q-Jet. Make sure the vacuum advance is getting venturi vacuum and not manifold vacuum.

i have an 81 el camino with a chevy 305 and want to buy a 2.73 posi rear axle and was wondering if it would be able to handle the engine or will the engine/transmission be able to handle the posi axle

While the 7.5" rear axle those cars came with is no Ford 9-inch, it easily stood up to all that GM put to it in the 70′s and 80′s, except of course the Grand National which got the 8.5". (So did the 442, but it didn’t make anywhere near enough power to hurt the 7.5", which the Monte SS also ran FWIW) So yes, it will hold up fine to the 305.

That said, its a terrible gear ratio, even 3.42 is anemic by todays standards, but it’s pushing what you want on the freeway with a non-overdrive transmission.

You can buy posi units from places like ring-pinion.com, summitracing.com, and jegs.com, so its not like posi in a rear end with terrible gears is worth much.
